It may seem like Brexit has disappeared from the headlines, but the next deadline is approaching rapidly. On 31st October 2019, the United Kingdom had planned to leave the European Union, but instead EU leaders agreed a final extension to the deadline and Britain is now expected to exit the European Union on the 31st January 2020. In the meantime, a general election will take place on the 12th December 2019 when the Conservative government hopes to secure a majority.
Businesses across the UK have been undertaking impact assessments and making preparations for the multiple possible outcomes of the Brexit situation and are facing the challenge of predicting the consequences of Brexit for their business.
Many of our clients have contacted us for guidance, asking what they should do in order to prepare their business for Brexit. The issues are particularly relevant if your business is involved in moving goods across the UK border and we would like to share information, specifically on this topic, with our clients, to ensure everyone is prepared.
Actions you should take now
There are a number of actions that you should take now, if your business imports or exports goods to ensure that everything continues to run smoothly.
- Make sure your business has an EORI number that starts with GB
- Decide who will make the import declarations
- Apply to make importing easier (Transitional simplified procedures, the Common Transit Convention, Deferment account)
- Check the rate of import duty you’ll need to pay here
- Make sure your business has an EORI number that starts with GB and your Importer has an EU EORI number
- Decide who will make the export declarations and decide if you want to export your goods using transit
- Check the rate of import duty for your goods in the destination
- Decide who will transport your goods outside the UK
You will not usually need an EORI number if you only:
- provide services
- move goods between Northern Ireland and Ireland
